Refurbished Macs: what to consider
A refurbished Mac can be a sensible buy — if the specific machine's age, battery and lock status suit the software you need to run. This page is qualitative on purpose: this directory publishes no invented price guidance for Macs.
Software support comes first
Apple supports each Mac model for a limited span of macOS releases. Before anything else, confirm the exact model can run a currently supported version of macOS and the apps you depend on. A machine that cannot update may still work, but it will fall behind on security updates and app compatibility.
Check the lock status in person
- Activation Lock / iCloud: the Mac must not be tied to a previous owner's Apple account. Ask the seller to demonstrate it signed out and set up clean.
- Device management (MDM): a formerly company-managed Mac can show a management profile. Check Settings for profiles and ask where the machine came from.
- Firmware / account passwords: make sure you can create your own admin account with no unknown passwords in the way.
Battery, storage and memory
- Ask for the battery cycle count and maximum capacity shown in system settings, and compare it with how you will actually use the machine.
- On many newer Mac laptops, storage and memory cannot be upgraded after purchase — buy the capacity you need now, not the capacity you hope to add later.
- Test the keyboard, trackpad, screen, camera, speakers and every port, and check the charger is included and working.
Intel or Apple silicon
Older Intel Macs and newer Apple-silicon Macs differ in performance, heat, battery behaviour and how long software will support them. Neither is automatically the right answer — the deciding factors are your apps, the machine's update horizon, and its tested condition on the day.
Stores with a verified Macs flag
No store in the current verified seed set has a verified “sells refurbished Macs” flag yet, so none is listed under this filter rather than assumed.
See also the general buying checklist — most of it applies to Macs as well.
Listings are informational only and do not constitute an endorsement. Warranty, grading, pricing, and inventory details are provided by the stores, may change, and should be verified directly with the store before purchase. Always inspect and test a refurbished computer before buying.
